Roof Storm Damage Checklist For Ohio Homeowners

No matter where you live in Ohio, you’ve had your fair share of harsh weather over the years. Storms that bring driving wind and rain, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and summer storms. These can wreak havoc on roofs and other exterior surfaces of your home. The effects of bad storms, over time, can become costly to repair. However, you can save up on expensive damage down the line by following our roof storm damage checklist.

Our Roof Storm Damage Checklist

WEATHERING AND PREPARATION

Before a storm, visually inspect your roof for any loose or missing shingles. If you notice shingles coming off, missing, or curling, get someone to repair it as soon as possible. If the shingle is severely damaged or missing, we recommend getting a new one to avoid water damage and leaks in the future.

DURING A STORM

When strong winds pick up during a storm, your roof is under extreme pressure. When these winds get underneath your shingles, they can peel them off or break them apart. If you notice shingles missing, this could mean your house is at risk of water damage. You can temporarily tarp your roof when the weather favors and wait for the storm to pass.

AFTER A STORM

After a storm has passed, it’s time to check for any damage that may have been caused. First, pick up any loose shingles to avoid tripping hazards. Next, walk around the perimeter of your house and look for damage to the trim or siding. If you see any broken windows, dents in siding, or other signs of destruction, it’s best to get them fixed sooner rather than later.

Schedule A Free Roof Inspection With A Local Roofer In Ohio

Contact a reputable, professional roofing contractor to schedule an inspection and assist you in determining the extent of the damage. All Around Roofing, Siding, and Gutters provides free roof inspections and knows how to look for roof damage safely.

Roof: Evaluate your roof visually by walking around the perimeter of your home and noting any visible storm damage.

Keep a list of notes and take photos — this may come in handy later for insurance purposes. In addition, any visible signs of storm damage, such as dented, torn, curled, or missing shingles, should be documented.

Window: Storm damage may be more than just a roof issue — the force of the strong wind can also cause major structural problems inside your home, such as cracked or broken windows. Have your broken windows fixed by professionals right away to avoid further damage.

Trim: Inspect the nailing strips and the fascia boards. Storm damage may show up on your exterior siding or trim, such as broken or cracked boards, chunks of wood missing from the fascia, and torn shingles.

After your home is cleared of any tripping hazards, take a look into each room and check for water stains or other damage that may have occurred due to roofing issues or leaks. While you’re up in the attic, check to see if there are signs of leakage — loose insulation or dark brown stains on the insulation and rafters — which can indicate a roofing issue that needs to be resolved.
